Centre for Immunology, Genetics, and Systems Biology

Immunology, Genetics and Systems Biomedicine

Advancing immunology, genetics, and systems biology through rigorous, collaborative research.

Advisory scientists lead funding searches and structure the studies, while members train through seminars and intensive research bootcamps in a supportive environment, producing outputs suitable for publication or future funding.

How the Centre is organised

Two councils, and a ladder you climb by finishing work.

Direction sits with two councils. Standing is earned by completing supervised research, not by appointment — every grade above Registered Member is reached by carrying a piece of work to publication-ready material.

Supreme Advisory Council

Five permanent seats, carrying the direction of the Centre.

High Scientific Council

Seven seats held for a year, three of them taken by the highest research scores.

Membership looks different depending on where you are in your career. Each guide sets out what the first steps involve and what they lead to.

A guide for early-career researchers

Where to start, and what the first year looks like.

What this involves

Foundational Training W1a covers narrative review synthesis and W1b covers grant writing, both one to one. Research Integrity and Publication Ethics (W0) is taken alongside them and is required of every Affiliated Member. With those in hand you are a Research Associate; one further workshop with a supervised, publication-ready project makes you a Senior Researcher; three completed programmes, or two with a demonstrated third skill, make you a Principal Researcher.

A guide for senior academics and the advisory board

How senior members shape the Centre's work.

What this involves

Scientific Advisors supervise projects, mentor one to one and lead research tracks. Each year the top half of advisors by member score become Distinguished Scientific Advisors. The High Scientific Council seats seven members drawn from the top fifteen advisors by research score: the top three are seated automatically and elect the remaining four. The Supreme Advisory Council holds five permanent seats and decides every application that changes a member's level, designation or seat.

Mission

Research carried through to an output.

CISBM exists to make scientific collaboration straightforward. We bring researchers together around defined activities designed to produce genuine scientific output: proposals, manuscripts, computational analyses, and experimental concepts, each taken through to a finished piece of work.

Our work spans immunology, genetics, and systems biology, and the methods that connect molecular-scale data to clinical questions. We welcome researchers from every institution and at every career stage, and we judge the work by its rigor and originality.

    Supervision, then a skill

Everyone begins one to one: review synthesis, grant writing, research integrity. Then one method, learned in depth and used on a real project until it is done.

  • The work

    Themes, groups, projects

Work is organised in themes, carried by groups, and done as projects. A finished project is what puts a name on the ranking and a paper in the record.

Membership

Membership is free, and built for scientific collaboration.

CISBM membership is free in every category. Regular and Affiliated members train, build skills, and collaborate directly on research outputs, while the Senior Committee shapes scientific direction and strategy. Every category is open to researchers who meet its academic requirements.
